What Is Vocational Education?
What is vocational education, how does it differ from college, and how can it be used to meet my particular needs? I’ve seen many articles written to explain this topic. Some of these describe college as a university with liberal arts programs that include subjects such as science, English, mathematics and social science. This sounds great but what do vocational courses offer, and how can they help me succeed in life?

Vocational education refers to a specific type of course work that students complete in order to acquire a certificate, associate degree or bachelor’s degree in a particular subject. This can be in any field. For example, automotive technicians often complete an apprenticeship program before obtaining their certificate so that they can work directly under a licensed car dealer and learn the trade themselves. Individuals may choose to go on to earn a two-year degree via a vocational school or community college in their chosen profession. Others may complete a four-year degree through a university vocational program.

The good news about vocational training is that the subjects you learn are very relevant to your future career. You will learn important subjects such as safety, mechanics, auto body repair and so forth. You will gain valuable hands on experience that will prepare you to be employable immediately following graduation. In fact, I can tell you that many automotive technicians began their careers by attending a vocational school first. This gave them the hands on experience they needed to break into the automotive industry.

Vocational education can lead to a number of career options. Career opportunities in the automotive field include: mechanic, repair specialist, brake technician, and automotive technician. As you can see, there is certainly a demand for qualified people in this field. By taking coursework toward a vocational degree, you will be able to enhance your employment potential and give yourself an edge in competing for these highly desirable and competitive jobs.

What is vocational education? You can get your education by attending a vocational or trade school. There are several ways to get vocational training. One of the most common ways to get this type of education includes community colleges, correspondence schools, technical institutes, vocational schools and others. While most students go on to become full time or part time workers, others find employment as employees of the automotive industry, or work in related fields such as automotive sales and service, automotive maintenance, automotive technology, or manufacturing.

The cost of vocational training varies. It is typically going to be more expensive than a standard college education. However, it is also likely to give you a wider range of opportunities. If you have an interest in a particular line of work and want to start out in that field, vocational training is an excellent way to get the education you need.

As mentioned above, not all vocational programs lead to a career. Many of them do, but they do so for a different reason. They often are for placement purposes. For example, some people will go on to train with the automotive industry and then find employment with a mechanic. They receive specialized training and are put in the position of performing specific services under the supervision of a mechanic. Other people take courses such as computer skills training or graphic design to open their own design firm.
